What is a Subject Matter Expert?

A subject-matter expert is someone who is an expert in a particular topic or profession and offers their knowledge to a company, community or variety of clients. 

Subject-matter experts are often seen as authority figures within their field of expertise, and depending on how outspoken they are, could quickly come to be considered as a thought leader.

Subject-matter experts will have a wealth of experience in both theory and practice of their chosen field, and will be capable of sharing their knowledge. Companies often engage with subject-matter experts to solve problems or to oversee critical business operations, and ensure everything is progressing as it should be. 

One of the key points that comes into play when engaging as a subject-matter expert is actively building upon a strong, existing knowledge base. This is done by actively seeking opportunities to learn and engage with those in your industry.

Using social media and being part of the discussion is highly recommended as it allows you to have a platform and share your knowledge to an audience of people with an interest in your area of knowledge.
